Looking at the Bentley manual, it doesn't seem to give the nominal length for
the type 3 pushrod. There is a section in Ch 8, section 4.4, where they mention
that you should have ~225mm from the back of the pedal to the cross panel in
front of the pedals, measured with the ruler horizontal. That somewhat agrees
with the gauge, if you read between the lines.

Thinking about this some more, I suspect that the Bentley manual is not quite
saying the right thing. What they should say is, "Adjust the pedal stop plate
until the pedal is 225mm from the cross panel, and then adjust the pushrod to
give 1mm of free play at the MC (5-7mm at the pedal.) "

I measured 2 pushrods downstairs, and they both came out to about 153mm. So
that's your ball park for a type 3.

I have an early VW manual which gives the nominal length as 143.5mm +/- 5mm. I
suspect this is the wrong number and should be 153.5 or ? Perhaps someone out
there has some more data.

I've put a lot of time and thought into this, and I've read thru all the
manuals that I have here. In the end, I believe that your pushrod has been
changed, you should adjust it according to the proceedure in my second
paragraph above. The gauge I emailed you just helps you set the pedal stop
plate, which is the first step above.
