Some companies can bore out and resleeve the m/c in stainless - don't throw away the old bodies if there's a chance you won't get another! You need about 1mm clearance at the push-rod - about 1/2" to 3/4" at the pedal - check it with hand pressure. Single circuit m/c isn't as critical on push-rod length as the later dual-circuit, but if there isn't any, the seals can cover the port that lets fluid go in and out. I think the special gauge is only needed for the dual circuit. Dave.
