I've been away for a couple of days, so apologies for the late reply.
To fix the groove in the driveplate hub, I used a "Speedi Sleeve", as
recommended by Jim. They come in a huge number of sizes, and you
basically
just knock them on with a hammer. The final result is very impressive.
Did the sleeve go on easily? Was there any trouble or was it easy? I've
never
used one, so I'd really like to know how heart-stopping this might be.
It was extremely easy; just a couple of minutes work. The instructions
recommend using a thin coating of non-hardening sealant on the sleeve itself
before installing it. I used a small amount of red RTV, almost all of which
was squeezed out when I installed it, so there's most likely practically
none of it actually left between the hub and the sleeve.
Installation was simply a matter of knocking it on with a rubber mallet.

I REALLY like your lock. Could you have turned the drive plate 60 deg and
engaged 2 holes in it?
The lock was made by my very useful friend who helped with the whole job. He
works for a company that makes pumps, and has access to all kind of tools
etc., as well as lots of practical experience. He is also a VW enthusiast
and one day I will definitely find myself under his Beetle returning the
favour :~)
We started the engine, and gradually topped up the tranny following
Russ's
instructions.
Did you check the final drive gear oil level? Perhaps you did that
earlier, but
it's always a good idea to watch it, especially with an old car like this
where
you don't know how much it might leak.
Yes, I checked it before.You may remember that I asked about the colour when
I wanted to be sure it wasn't mixed with ATF.
