I don't think there should be any problem with using synthetic without a
filter. It's using it without a filter and never changing it (like they say you
can do in cars with filters) that would be the problem. In those cars, you just
replace the filter and top up the oil.

Personally, I think you're guessing at the cause of your problem, but there's
no question that you DID have a problem. There IS, however, a known problem
with VW rebuilds, which fits your symptoms. That is crud buildup in the oil
passages, which comes loose after a rebuild. For this reason, some people
recommend that the oil drilling plugs be drilled out so that the passages can
be cleaned. Then the openings are plugged again.

Some people also recommend never reusing an oil cooler, just because they can
become full of the same kind of crud.

It's possible that dino oil would not have dislodged this crud, but I think
it's more than likely that the same thing would have happened to you with
either choice. I'm sorry you had to go thru this, and I'm grateful that I
didn't, but at least we can all agree that at least it happened to someone who
was able to deal with it and fix it.

I just don't think it's fair to blame the crud on the synthetic oil. If the
case had been clean, this would not have happened.

My practice has always been to go down to my friendly local shop and use their
parts washer to flush all the passages thoroughly in both directions several
times. At the same time I do the same with the oil cooler.

I've never had any trouble, but maybe I've just been lucky. OTOH, I suspect
that I'm more thorough than most people, so I'm hoping that helps to improve my
odds. Or maybe the cleaning I do doesn't remove anything but just loosens up
the crud, and I'm living on borrowed time.

Who knows? It's all just a matter of statistics, so we can never predict who
will be the next victim.
