You should probably get a hold of a copy of this book: How to Hotrod Volkswagen Engines by Bill Fisher published by H. P. Books, Tucson, AZ, 1970 ISBN 0-912656-03-4 (excellent book, well written and researched) In this book, they go thru the various air cleaner options and comment specifically on the very old conception that aftermarket air cleaners are better than the stock one. The short story is that the stock air cleaner filters better and is less restrictive (airflow-wise) than anything else you can buy. In short, the only reason for the existance of the aftermarket filters is that the stock one won't fit on aftermarket carbs, and no one, other than VW, was willing to go to the expense of making up expensive VW-specific parts, let alone Type 3 specific parts, just to work with their carbs. I understand your complaint that the stock air cleaner is big and consequently in the way, but it's the very best option you have. A '67 type 3 with dual Solex's is a very nice setup, and sticking with the stock air cleaner is THE way to go with them. I also suspect that if you spend a little time with the hardware you'll soon figure out that it's really not all that hard to use. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
