And I'm sorry, but I don't know enough to add anything to the debate.

If it never gets above 85F in your area, they you don't even need the 10W-40
range. You could do just fine with 10W-30 or even straight SAE 30. It's
certainly true that multi-grade oil technology has greatly improved since our
cars were made and demanded straight weight oils, but there's no point in multi-
grade oil in a car that never sees temps below 40F.

I often just go the easy route when changine oil on one of my cars with the
full flow filtering. I still like to pull the sump plate occasionally, just to
examine what's there and clean it out, but I agree that the filter is doing the
lion's share of the work now.

On cars with full flow filters, I would recommend pulling the sump plate at
least once every 4 oil changes or at least once every 2 years. I would clean it
every oil change for awhile after an engine rebuild.

I once pulled a sump plate from a type 3 (not mine!) and found the entire
screen covered with the remnants of one of those blue paper towels that you get
for cleaning your windshield at the gas station. The owner had no idea of how
it got there, but, then again, he was pretty clueless about a lot of things....
