Once you get the tool in there, you will still need to wiggle and jiggle the drive gear a bit as you try to pull it out. It's a helical cut gear, too, so you will need to turn it slowly CCW as it comes out. Yes, sometimes they don't want to come, but they always do if you are persistent.
