My square starts on the first compression stroke with the points, and they havent been touched since Parma and that was about 10K mi ago. In fact, I often bump start it with no reason to use the starter cause it takes so little to fire off. > Our T3 has never started on the first crank. All I know is that our T3 starts faster > and runs smoother (at least to me anyway) but anyone with an > automotive back ground knows that electronic ignition (or just points) > is much more reliable than mechanical points that wear out and need > adjusting. Am I wrong here too? Problem is quality control... Pertonix and compufire are cheap aftermarket products that havent gone through the HALT (Highly accelerated life testing) that the OEM stuff does... and they fail, often, not all of them but a good percentage and usually after 2-3 years. and when they let go they quit completely, and unless you have some extra points along your hosed. Quality points... the ventilated kind that dont grow the little tit on them will last a very long time... even without adjustment. I just pulled the original points out of my 61 Merc outboard, they hadnt failed yet, but they finally worn the cam down a bit and needed adjustment. That motor saw a lot of use back in the 60's... and has been used every summer of its life. > > >>> This mentality continues to be stroked by those who stand to profit > from sales of the 009s. > > What about VW points manufacturers? This is a Billion dollar industry! > :-) I dont think many people are making points anymore... the Standard ignition points sets I get are usually accompanied by a thick layer of dust on the box.
