It sat from '85 until 2000. But the car fired up and is still running on
those points. I drive the car approx. 4000 miles a year, so that is
about 20K miles on those points since the car went back into service. >>
I'm not sure I put on as many miles per year that Russ does, but I'm still
running the same set of points in my cars that I put in back in 98. On my Notch,
I found that I needed to check the point gap a little more often than once
every 5 years though. :D Mine had opened up a little, and was causing a slight
rough engine idle. I guess I should check the wife's car one of these days. :D
Last year I did have a German Bosch blue coil start to fail, but it was over
15 years old, and it does still work, but it has a miss in the mid range with a
load. I found it by swapping everything out the day before I left for the
2004 Invasion. After I found it, I put the car back as it was, and put on a black
t-3 coil (I had laying on the shelf) to get me around. It's still in place,
and I loaned my blue coil to my neighbor, until he finds a coil to use in his
t-3.
I think Toby said he had a pertonix fail after 3 years, but was carrying a
set of points in his car to get him home. If I remember right, that was about 4
years ago though. He's since gone to a CDI unit. I know the blue coils seem to
die after a short amount of time too. I think the list figured out that it
was a manufacturing materials related deal though.
