The normal oil level is below that shaft, so there is little tendency to leak there, except on an extreme downslope. If you took your tranny apart, you'd find that the shift shaft (hockey stick) is supported by 2 simple brass bushings and that you have both. On later cars, the outer bushing was replaced with a more elaborate stepped bushing; the large outer end of the stepped bushing held a small standard oil seal. I'm sure that it would be possible to replace your bushing with the later one, but I'm also pretty sure that it would not be worth the effort, unless your bushing was already worn to the point where replacement was necessary. If you REALLY wanted to add that seal, the simplest way to do it would probably be to just find a later nose cone of the proper vintage and swap it in. I see that Russ mentioned a rubber dust boot that should go over that nose and seal against the body. You probably have yours, but I have some of them if you need one. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
