I'm betting that's a good chunk of my problem- vacuum leaks. The thing that has rotted out (and always rots out) is the EGR filter. To fix this you will need to eliminate at least the function of the EGR, because I don't think the filters are available anymore. You can either block off the ports at each end of where the filter attached (one at the heat exchanger and one at the right side of the EGR valve) or you can remove the EGR valve completely and then block off the hole that this leaves in the IAD. If you leave the EGR valve there, it is rather easy to block and this leaves it looking original. It is IMPORTANT that you properly and quickly block off the heat exchanger EGR port. If you don't, the hot exhaust gases leaking out there will burn up the wiring in that area. Early EGR valves came with a solid pipe, but the later ones came with a rubber section just to make them compliant to manufacturing tolerances. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
