I am 100% sure that the EGR pipe is rotted out. I don't think the filter is rotted, oddly enough, but I need to study further. So, let me get it straight- the heat exchanger connects to the filter (which early on was a cyclonic filter but later was a replaceable filter), and from the filter it goes to the EGR valve, and from the EGR we go to the IAD. By this logic, and since the EGR filter was supposedly a service item, removing the filter shouldn't require pulling the engine. And we've established that a Type 1 heat-riser block-off plate will do the trick in the port on the heat exchanger. This is probably the course of action I'll take. I honestly don't care for the EGR in the first place. Both NY, where I live now, and CT, where I'll be moving to in a few months, do not require emissions inspections. I'll keep the parts since.... well... you never know. The EGR has electrical connections, right? What's the proper course of action with these? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
