Instruction from VW is to assemble with graphite lubricant. Did your workshop do that, Russ? The nuts are the same as a Type 2 axle shaft nut 46mm, so once you've sawn off the old muffler, heat, liquid wrench and a 46mm socket should salvage the boxes if the threads are any good. Dave.
