The fuel line originally came thru the metal sheet that comes out with the
engine. I can imagine putting it above, thru the sheet that is part of the
car's body; that certainly would make for one less thing that had to be
disconnected from underneath.
Bob Hoover has long suggested making a fitting to get that line thru whatever
hole you choose. Use one of those 3/8" threaded bushings that are used in lamp
fixtures and then solder a length of copper tubing into it. You then fix the
bushing in the plate with 2 of the special bushing nuts and then bend the
copper tubing to fit and point in exactly the direction you like. Steel tubing
would actually be better, because it would not be as likely to work harden and
break, but copper tubing is more readily available.
