Just remove the damper if you want to separate the effects of the 2, but the damper really can't contribute play. There is, however, a rubber bushing in the Pittman arm where the damper anchors. That bushing often is rotted out and needs to be replaced. You MIGHT be feeling that. That bushihg is still available because it was also used in bugs. > When I had the coupler off I moved the small shaft coming out of the > steering box and there was a little bit of play (I suppose since the > steering wheel has a bigger diameter, the play is exacerbated by a > huge degree). Right. You also need to check this only when the steering is centered. Off center the play gets bigger. There should really be no perceptable play on center when you're just holding the box. > Any thoughts on this and whether a new steering box is necessary or can the > current one be adjusted in some way? Dampers often fail, while steering boxes tend to be quite reliable. Check the bolts as Russ suggested. If you have a good manual you could even try adjusting the box, but that's fairly hard to do. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
