> If oil > is forced out something is wrong with the engine, too > much blowby or the vacuum draw is not connected to > the carburettor. Or it might simply be an air leak ..... VW Workshop bulletin M-5 August 1969 for Types 1, 2, 3, and industrial engines 122, 124A and 126A states:- "If oil is lost via the crankcase breather, first check whether the cylinder head cover gasket is properly located, as tests have shown the following: Increased pressure in the crankcase causes oil to be forced out of the crankcase breather on some engines. The cause of the increase in pressure can be due to gaskets that slipped. (picture showing top edge of gasket displaced downwards slightly, opening a small gap with the flange). If a gasket slips (see illustration) air can enter the crankcase. As a result, oil is forced into the oil bath air cleaner or it is lost via the condensate drain tube and the rubber valve. On vehicle engines this oil loss causes excessive smoking at high speeds, caused by the oil being thrown against the muffler". There have been some posts about oil leaking out over the engine and people didn't know why - no obvious engine fault. Just worth checking the RC gaskets first - official advice from VW. Dave.
