To avoid melting the plastic bit, don't hold your foot on the pedal - use the
parking brake if you are stopped a while, but keep an eye in the rear-view
mirror in case someone is storming up behind.  I had a high-level brake light
lens that melted when the brake light switch stayed on (another type of VW)!
