I don't think the usual problem is burnout of the contacts from overcurrent, 
but rather that the contacts get contaminated with brake fluid which manages to 
seep around the diaphram seal. My theory is that when the fluid is exposed to 
the tiny spark that occurs each time the contacts open the fluid breaks down 
into tiny bits of something which happens to be an insulator. Eventually this 
builds up an insulating layer that prevents contact from happening.

Of course, if you replaced your bulbs with ones that drew much more current, 
this might change the picture dramatically. LED lamps should be a step in a 
good direction, however.
