With the engine running, pull the hose off the VM. The idle should race due to 
the air that's getting in. Does it?.

Leave it to nearly last. It's a long shot.

Really sounds like it is low on fluid. I'm trying to think of something that 
would make this possible while the dipstick still looked full, and the only 
things I can think of are a clogged filter, which limits the oil which the pump 
can suck, or a disintegrated rubber dipstick plug, at the top of the dipstick, 
which might let the dipstick go down too far. I don't even know if the latter 
is possible.
