Really sounds like it is low on fluid. I'm trying to think of something that would make this possible while the dipstick still looked full, and the only things I can think of are a clogged filter, which limits the oil which the pump can suck, or a disintegrated rubber dipstick plug, at the top of the dipstick, which might let the dipstick go down too far.
