I'm pretty sure that both the owner's manual and the Bentley manual warn you against this. Towing an AT type 3 is limited to 30 miles and 30 MPH. > After getting to the destination, i realized i had lost second and third > gears. > > What damage have i done to the tranny? > What will be required to fix the damage? > Are there any easy fixes for it? Russ will know best, but I'd guess that the damage would be extensive. The AT is lubricated by ATF pumped around by the ATF pump at the front of the transmission. The pump is driven by the engine, not the wheels, so unless the engine is running, the AT gets no lubrication. In theory, you could get around this by just starting the engine and let it idle in N the whole way. This might not even be legal, and you'd still have no way of knowing if the engine had died for some reason. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
