My guess is that it's exactly the same as clipping your inductive timing light 
around a SP wire. This is a good way to test to see if current is actually 
running thru that wire when it should be. I would still prefer to use my timing 
light for this test, because I probably already have it out and it also tells 
me other good info.

You could make your own with an LED, a ferrite torroid, and a piece of wire. I 
suggested that to a friend recently and it just helped him solve a year-old 
problem with his Volvo. His car would quit and he didn't know if it was due to 
loss of spark or of the EFI. He added this spark pickup and ran the wire to his 
dash so he could watch the LED. The next time the car died he could see that 
the LED still flashed when he tried to restart. The next day he found the bad 
solder joint where some relays were mounted to a PC board.
