I checked the specs with Bentley, and it is only supposed to downshift from 3rd to 2nd between 35 and 55 mph. This is definitely how my car behaves; the kickdown only works above approx 60kph.
The design seems a bit weird to me. Wouldn't it have been more logical to put the switch under the pedal? I am pretty sure this is how my modern Korean autobox works. As you press the pedal you can hear a switch clicking.
The reason VW did it the way they did, was to eliminate having make a different wire harness for MT and AT cars. If you will notice, all the wiring for the kick down is in the engine compartment.
But the wiring for the AT reversing lights goes all the way to the fuse box!
