Re: [T3] Ignition switch / steering column lock

I think the steering lock was one of those things that got selected, or not, by the importer. So each market, and each year, tended to be different. I think it was always an option, but by the time the car got to the showroom, the choice had already been made. In the US I know that '68s did not get it, but I believe that '69s, and later, did. In our case, it was just the whim of VWoA.

One more question: Inside the unit there is a bearing and soldered to the
bearing there is a ground wire. Does anyone know what this grounds?

It keeps the steering shaft at ground That's where the horn circuit eventually gets its ground when you push the horn button.

I spent this morning messing with the steering column. I have never really been sure what I have, in other words, which parts are correct and which parts aren't. I know the indicator housing isn't correct, and that the one I sent photos of yesterday is the right type. However, what I am less sure of is whether I have the right steering column.

Up to now I was under the impression that the late Type 34 has the same steering column as a Type 3. However, what I have is completely different to the one in the pictures in the Bentley manual. For one thing is bolts on under the dashboard, and has no mounting lower down like the Type 3 one. When I undid these bolts the whole thing just flopped down. The rubber seal where is goes through the body is also different.

There are two possilities. If the Type 34 really did have it's own steering column, like Jim mentioned, then there's a good chance that that's what I have. Otherwise, I suppose it's possible that at some point the original one was replaced by one from another car.

The result is that I haven't yet installed the new column unit, because I'm not completely sure it will fit. I did improve the adaptation of the incorrect part that is fitted so it now looks less of a kludge. This needs more investigation and only when I am completely sure what I have will I do any more work to it.
