Unless Mike is mistaken about the cable going all the way back to the rear seat I don't think that he is talking about the seatback release. These seatback releases do still work in my 63! There is a wingnut adjustor VW put on the seat bottom that I sometimes have to use to get them adjusted right but they do still work. In some sales literature somewhere I read that VW put the levers on the door frames to 'throw' the doors open when the button on the handle is pushed. I expect this is just a by product of the original idea. It does make for little extra effort when closing the doors...
