Nope- now I have the original carbs fitted with the original distributor (at
least they are the ones that came with the car and have suitable part
numbers) I have it set to 7.5 deg at idle with no vac as per instructions
and it maxes out at 30 something degress so I think its OK. It is the vac
advance whilst stationary that is worrying me. Do the vacuum cans fail by
getting too soft?

Yep that was me and I'm still having troubles :-(
