I certainly don't see any harm in what you're recommending, but I don't think the benefit is clear either. One thing I would take issue with is the idea that working the cam like this is better if done without load on the engine. If you think about it, the load on the valve train doesn't change at all with engine load. For a given set of parts and springs, it's almost totally a function of RPM and nothing else. Now maybe you're thinking that if something breaks while you're doing 4000 RPM standing still you would be able to shut it down quickly and with less damage than if you had been moving at 70 mph.
