So you really meant a LOOP? Hmmm..., anyone got a dead one that I could open up 
and inspect. I could do this without hurting anything other than the sealing 
paint on the screw that holds the cover on. I MIGHT even be able to fix it.

Seems odd that a wire loop would be useful here. The function of the diode 
(Bosch called it the Variode) was to be non-linear. The length of copper wire 
would be pretty linear.

Now that you mention it, I just took another look at this one and the shunt 
that is there on all the 12V diodes is not here on this one. I'd love to look 
inside, but I'd have to break the seal. I think I'll go downstairs, however, 
and refresh my memory on where that shunt actually was.
