It is almost certain that the old points were fine. A small piece of dirt just 
dropped into one side and kept it from making contact. You can clean them with 
a clean piece of paper.

Then this is exactly right and your pump is running as it should. (It starts up 
again as soon as you crank the starter.) This means that the main power relay, 
the fuel pump relay, the system ground and much of the brain is okay.

Now go to the back with the key ON and depress the throttle. Do you hear a 
series of clicks?

It's just possible that you need to pull the trigger contacts out and clean 
them again, but you can check them with an ohmmeter before you pull the 
distributor out. Just check from the center to each side contact for 
alternating make and break as the starter cranks the engine.
