The rubbers in my 69 are baked solid and transmit more vibration than those from the cars I have which lived in more temperate climates. The 69 rubbers are also slightly thinner, but there's not enough difference to explain noticable changes in how the car might sit. It really would take 1/2 inch of compression to make the car droop 1/2", and the rubbers are only about 1/2 inch thick. Keep in mind that the mounts next to the wheel wells are right in line with the wheels, so there's no "amplification" of this thinning. The rubber bushings I have are from midwest cars. The ones that I have been able to replace in my 69 have all been thrown away. I think that type 3s really are quieter than bugs or buses, but a lot depends on the individual car, and it's history. OTOH, these cars were all designed before detailed sound analysis was possible, so today's cars are much more effectively sound isolated than ours ever were. As for your high speed handling issue, you may have a point. I really don't know. The rubber bushings are actually spaced quite a distance apart so that they get a good "stance" with respect to the pan and body, but some motion is still clearly possible. I have no feeling for how important this might be. The fact that the 911 doesn't have a separate rear subframe may be a point in your favor. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
