BillK=> he saw a flash come out of the right hand => carb when we took the air cooler off and restarted. => ... After the car is idling, the popping => stops and the car runs normally. Any suggestions? First, true backfire can be destructive to the carb and even cause an engine fire, and you should not accept having this happen *at all*. It indicates an extreme timing problem -- at that moment the spark and valve are out of sync for some reason. I agree that you should start with a cold compression test to eliminate a bad valve, check that your plug wires aren't crossed, then run your valve lash and timing procedures carefully, setting everything to standard spec. You can expect to discover the problem fairly easily. The sticking advance mechanism is a good suggestion. It would be a good idea for anyone on this list to go through their distributor, check it out carefully and be sure it's in tip-top shape, as it makes a huge difference in performance and can cause all sorts of subtle problems.
