WilliamK=> 69 SQBK dual carb ... => What might I start to look at? As Jim said, backfire is rare. Most people hear postignition, from excess fuel vapor in the exhaust stream. This is usually a timing issue, most often spark timing but sometimes valve adjustment. If you're running too rich it'll be more obvious. Run your valve, check dwell and timing, and check your chokes. If you ever get real backfire, you'll know. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand, just in case. => how dangerous is it? It may help to know that most carbed cars do this a lot on a much smaller scale, but the muffler keeps it quiet. It's not dangerous per se; if you've got a rusty muffler, a big one could blow out the side, but you needed a new muffler anyway. It does indicate inefficiency in your setup, though, and that *can* hurt your motor.
