If your '73 is a USA-spec car, it would have come originally with fuel injection. What kinds of carbs are on there now? The Solex PDSIT 32/33 carbs were the stock carbs used on Type 3s before the FI came out. The proper Solex carbs are easier to tune and adjust for your engine than the aftermarket brands. Tell us what kind of engine you have (hopefully its a Type 3) and what your carb set-up is. Disconnected hoses and electrical connectors might be remnants of the old FI system, but it's kind of hard to tell from here.. > I bought a new pump at a local parts store, primed the > carbs and tried to start it. I didn't put the air > filter back on, could that be the reason it didn't > start? Air filter has nothing to do with it. First check routine tune-up items. Valve adjustment, check/adjust points, timing (you can set it statically to TDC for now if you can't yet start it), check for spark to all 4 cylinders. Once the tune-up items are to spec, then move on to fuel system. Sorting fuel system/delivery problems will depend largely on what kind of carbs you have. The Muir "Volkswagen for Idiots" manual is a good resource for a VW beginner. It helped me a great deal when I got my first VW (which was a Type 3). You will also need the Bentley Type 3 manual for other info and repair guidance. -Mark Fuhriman '69 Fastback ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
