It's a *major* pain in san francisco. People just toddle into the middle of the street to where you have to swerve around them with alarming regularity. The engine only needs to be off for a moment and you can produce such an event (at least, on my bike). Downshifting a second before you hit the ignition makes it 'better', notably. (higher revs, more compression) Back on a car-related issue (though still on the subject of backfiring) - my '67 Squareback likes to 'cough' when it's just warming up. I'll try to explain - I depress the gas pedal a bit (off of the fast choked-up idle) and as the engine starts to rev up, it 'coughs' like a little carb-end backfire.
