I believe the > former is the correct answer but will only be sure at the weekend. I had that sort of problem on my Fastback for a while. I got sick of the stumble off the line, so I took the carbs off and had a look at what was going on. I found that at some stage, the washers that go in front of the accelerator pump spring were different thicknesses on each side, causing an unequal amount to be injected when I pressed the accelerator. I changed the washers round for all of the same type, and it has improved the total drivability for the car completely. This would probably make an even greater difference on an automatic since you can't just put the clutch in and rev it to get it going. You can easily tell when the pump is set too rich- with the air cleaner off, if you rev it, you will see some fuel splash up and the engine will make a choking noise. This can also happen if the accelerator pump nozzle is aimed incorrectly. If it is too lean, then the engine makes a sucking noise followed by the stumble. > BTW, The automatic transmission is amazingly smooth. I've never seen > anything like it on any other car. I have only driven 1 automatic Type 4, but that sold me. I too was impressed with how smooth it was. I had always imagined aircooled automatics to be clunky and gutless.
