I took my car out for a spin the other day, for the first time in about 6 months. It was nice to drive it with working indicators, brake lights and horn for the first time. Makes me feel less of a criminal. Everything went fine, except that it missed or hesitated on hills. When I got home I tried revving it up to high rpm in neutral and it banged at the exhaust and clouds of black smoke came out. It idles fine, starts instantly and runs OK otherwise. I was wondering whether I might need to adjust the accelerator pump, but don't really have a clue how to do this right. I have already been advised to check when this happens, i.e. whether it is only upon pressing the pedal or whether it happens when the pedal is held steady too. I believe the former is the correct answer but will only be sure at the weekend. BTW, I have a carb base which is missing the ball-valve and cover for the accelerator pump. the result is that operating the pump only results in bubbles being blown in the carb bowl. This is NOT the one that I am using in the car. BTW, The automatic transmission is amazingly smooth. I've never seen anything like it on any other car. BTW2, I've traced that annoying rattle that we discussed once to the rear bumper. Annoying, but harmless. BTW3, I think that a whining sound from the rear which I think I mentioned here once turned out to be the brakes. I had a seized piston which must have been holding the shoe slightly against the drum. I have since changed the cylinder and the whining is gone.
