In 1966 or 67 Andy Palm, Mike Burton, and I were sitting in a dorm room
studying for a physics exam. We had slowly realized the importance that
conservation laws played in solving physical problems. The conservation of
mass, charge, energy and momentum are important almost everywhere, but we
realized that these laws alone were not sufficient. That was when we proposed
the Conservation of Perversity.

The Conservation of Perversity leads to some remarkable conclusions: If things
seem to be going well, then either you aren't fully aware of what's really
happening, or you are about to suffer a setback. The longer things seem to go
well the larger the oversight or setback will be. It never fails.
