I agree that it seemed strange, but that's what Gary Berg told me when he was 
describing how they have to use different welding rods when welding the fan to 
the hub on different type 3 and type 4 engines. I believe that he claimed that 
the type 3 and Porsche type 4 hubs were steel, but that the VW type 4 fan hubs 
were cast iron.

I quoted him wrong above. I should not have used the word forged.

Yeah, you're right, and I never think of it this way. But, to be fair, I wasn't 
really talking about the cronology, just the "logical" progression.

Things like gasket kits and small parts that were unique to the 1800 really are 
quite a bit more expensive. It seems to me that an 1800 gasket set was 
something like 2x the price of either the 1700 or 2L kit. That's an old memory, 
and I wasn't shopping around, I was just buying from someone here who 
specializes in type 4 stuff.  

I thought it was reasonable when I realized that there were probably many more 
1700s and 2L engines made than 1800s.  

What do you mean by "93-96mm cylinders have the same register?" 
I just don't understand the statement.
