If you had also replace the front pads at this same time, then this would just be the piston movement necessary to take the extra travel out of the calipers. If you didn't just replace the pads, then this means that the rears were still adjusted too loose. If some of the rear pistons were sticking, then they might not have returned afterwards and this would keep further adjustments, including the handbrake, from being correct. > Is it possible, that as the brakes were originally completely off - > dismantled - that they only arranged themselves internally when I pressed > the pedal for the first time and that after that I should have adjusted them > some more? If you have to adjust them a lot they will need to be pressed a few times to keep them centered within the drums while you continue to adjust them. I will sometimes start up the engine and apply the brakes lightly a few times with the wheels (off the ground) turning forward and reverse. Do this with the handbrake cables loose. Only adjust the handbrake cables after the rear adjustments are correct. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
