<x-charset windows-1255>> Adjust the rear brakes properly. > Engage the hand brake lever 4-6 notches. > Adjust each hand brake cable until you can not rotate the rear wheels at > all by hand. Hi, Thanks to all for your replies. When I had the rear of the car in the air, I adjusted the brakes first, and then the handbrake. The first time I pressed the brake pedal it went right down to the floor but after that it felt firm and solid. At that point, the handbrake held the rear wheels solidly; I couldn't turn them at all by hand. When I started the car and drove it a bit I was under the impression that the pedal was rather low, but I can't be sure as I'm not sure how low it should go. It stopped the car OK. At that point it certainly seemed as if I could push the car with the handbrake on. Is it possible, that as the brakes were originally completely off - dismantled - that they only arranged themselves internally when I pressed the pedal for the first time and that after that I should have adjusted them some more? It's also possible that I didn't adjust the brakes correctly. I may have backed them off too far. I'll know more tomorrow when I look at it again.
