The "nuts" actually have male threads attached and they are part of the muffler. They connect the muffler to the heater box by way of a fitting that looks like a giant pipe union. If your heater boxes are loose you will probably not be able to tighten them up. The unions freeze up with rust, and once the gasket in there is gone there is nothing else you can do. > How are these supposed to be attached to the muffler?
