I'm not sure how the earlier mufflers are (never seen one), but what you're
describing sounds normal for the late setup I'm familiar with -- the pre-heat
exchangers (mini heater) are sepearate and removable from the muffler itself; 
the big nuts are for removal.  

Provided they aren't solidly rusted together, that is. =)

Me, I'd put some antisieze on the threads (means taking them off temporarily),
leave them loose until the muffler is mounted (for alignment ease) and then 
tighten them up.  But I am by no means an expert.
