RE: [T3] The 2004 Type 3 invasion!!!!!!

From: Aaron
How many miles have you put on your transmission and
what do you think of it? Is it as much of a tank
(solid) as people claim? Have you had problems with
it? I must say this is the thing I'm most worried
about with this car... I love manuals, mostly for
their ease of servicing, but I'm kind of happy this is
an automatic so the wife can have something to drive
if her car is in the shop (my daily driver is a
stick)...

Thanks...
======================================================

My autotranny is 33 years old and still works very well.
Mileage ? It has unknown miles but I can say it has
gone through 6 owners and a bunch of engine (two of mine)
I have had autotrannies on American cars and trucks and
learned many tips on what not to do and do.

When stuck in the mud , do not slap the shift lever back and
forth into reverse and foreward without stopping tires first
and do not do this for too long or smoke will come out of it,
do not place in reverse when driving foreward unless life is
in danger, do not gun engine and throw lever in gear from park
or neutral, do not forget to replace transmission fluid every
20,000 miles of normal driving or 10,000 miles of heavy towing,
loading or lugging on extened steep hills, check oil color
and level when you check engine.

Most people do not replace the fluid for the life of the
transmission , meaning until it is dead. Most people do not
know that when autotrannies are old and the flid is dark or
not red that it is potentially going to fail. Some people
do not know when they put in tranny flush and loosen the
particles from the torque converter, that this may damage the
transmssion with sharp particles. If the transmission is old
and the fluid has not been replaced in years or many miles ,
it is best to have the torque converter replaced or rebuilt for a
110 dollars in order to save the tranny and give it many more
years of troublefree life. I was always wondering why new trannies
failed when the old torque converter was used, even if drained.

My tranny so far , just required new pan seal, shift o ring,
kickdown switch O ring and outer body seals to prevent the
bad leaks I had.

I am not a gentle driver as past messages can explain, the autotranny
has held up well. When I drive a stick like this I usually need
to replace the clutch, bearing and maybe the spring plate every
year, maybe I am a terrible driver for sticks.

The only problem I have had with the autotranny is bad info on the
the correct gland nut which cost me several broken flexplates and
torque converters. See past forum mails.

I hope this helps.
