If you look at the way an air cooled head is built, you will notice that the guides are at about the highest point in the valve train. And, they are inclined up. Very little chance of oil getting into the valve guide. On the water cooled engines, the valve guide was at about the lowest point in the head. The guides are flooded with oil while the engine is running. This is why they had problems with oil consumption on deceleration. And there were several recalls to replace valve seals in the water cooled engines.
