Haven't read all posts for the past few days yet, so this might have been posted. It is a sad day... 07/30/03 - Mexico City Last Beetle Produced in Mexico It started in Germany and ended in Mexico 70 years later. The last Volkswagen bug rolled off an assembly line today in Puebla, Mexico. The Volkswagen plant was the last to produce the two-passenger car. The United States and many other governments banned the original bug in the '70s because its rear engine didn't meet safety standards. The car has continued to be popular in Mexico, especially as a taxi cab. But Mexico phased out two-door cabs, squashing the bug for good. Collectors from all over the world traveled to Mexico to get their own last-edition bug. Volkswagen produce three-thousand of them to be sold at Mexican dealerships for eight-thousand dollars. The very last bug in the world is baby blue. Adorned with a Mexican flag made of flowers, the car was serenaded by a mariachi band. It's headed for a museum in Germany. Workers who produced the Beetle will move to other departments at the Mexican factory, which also makes Jettas and the modern new Beetle.
