Yes, that's high. It should be 900-950 for AT, IIRC.

I would expect an off brand VR to work just fine, but perhaps not be as long 
term reliable as a Bosch. I have no real good data on this, I've just seen to 
many cars with charging system problems that were traced back to bad, but old, 
plain black box VRs.

I'm sending you my generator FAQ. If you have a voltmeter and know how to use  
it you should be able to find the problem.
