Wiggling the key doesn't help. Dash lights don't dim until after the 
delay when the starter is turning.

Good point! :) Time to look at both the Thing and the Squareback...

I've inventoried and taken pictures of my box of fuel injection parts 
that came with the car.

I guess the first step would be making sure I have all the parts to 
start with...

Paint is Savannah Beige. Interior vinyl is brown. Seats are goldish 
brown - not sure of the VW names.
