Bad gas? How long has the car been sitting?

Hello all,
I am new to the VW scene, eventhough I grew-up in the back of a bug, and
I have a quick question.
First, I have a sputtering problem that is intermitant. The problem has
no patterns. it dosen't matter if it's hot or cold. And it will happen one
time and I go back out 20 minutes later and it is fine. Got any ideas?
