If they end up on top the pads wear unevenly. The single bleed caliper should have this the right way - if not the piston has rotated, and needs moving to it's correct position. The twin 'bleed' (really bleed + drain) could be intended for either side. If they are more recent calipers, they may not have the cut out on the piston face for the retaining plate at all. Dave.
