That sounds like one way to make them fit, BUT (and this is a biggie) IF they are like the OE self adjusting belts, there is a kind of pendulum weight in them that MUST sit upright for them to work right. This weight pivots to lock the belt any time there is an abnormal acceleration, as in a crash. And yes, upright means straight up. You should be able to see this if you remove some of the plastic covers on the reel. Be careful, one of them hides a nice big coil spring. As I think about this, I believe mounting the belt upside down would be safe, but you would find that it was locked ALL the time. You should be able to test this rather easily, beforehand. OTOH, maybe you're talking about mounting them right side up, but lower on the C pillar so that the belt then feeds up to the top of the pillar, then down to the center buckle, and then out to the lower outside anchor. There's a problem with this, too, as it requires that you anchor the reel to something that was not made to take the force of a seat belt anchor point. You should know that each of the OE seat belt anchor points is either into thicker material, or is reinforced to make it suitable for this service. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
