Hello All, I just thought I'd let you all in on a new and very good way of balancing your carbs (if you have carbs!) Throw out your unisyn's, forget your ears, the way to most precisely balance your carbs is not by air flow, but by manifold pressure ( or vacuum) For a while now I had been wondering if we could make use of the balance tube ports on our carbs to balance them, as opposed to the air flow, converted to pressure by a unisyn etc. Well, I came across a product called a " Morgan Carbtune II". I managed to get one cheap on ebay and am very impressed. This device is aimed at motorbike owners and it seems that it is the norm with modern bikes to balance the carbs by manifold pressure (vacuum). I managed to attach it to my manifolds fairly simply by removing the balance pipe completely, blocking one balance pipe port on each side with a rubber bung (piece of 8mm 'o' ring), and sticking the tubes from the Carbtune into the 2 other pipes. I had to stuff some slightly oversized brass (K&S) tube down the end of the rubber tube to make it seal snugly) Anyway, I had not too long previously balanced my carbs with a unisyn and thought them well balanced, but the results I got back with the carbtune showed quite a discrepancy. I could easily adjust the carbs to within 1/2 cm Hg with the device- and because it has 2 gauges side by side, it was much easier to fine tune them so the balance was kept even throughout the RPM range. One thing I did notice though was that on dropping the engine speed, they drift quite out of balance- one is much slower to respond, but they settle to perfect balance again in a few seconds. I can tell you that this has had a dramatic effect on my cars driveability. It seems to just get better and better at the moment and is running sweeter than ever before after this tune-up. They're not cheap, but work really well in my opinion. By the way I don't have anything to do with the company that makes them- I was just really impressed. Its a tiny little LED head torch with a recoiling strap which comes in its own tiny little leather case- not much larger than a golf ball. Its light, bright, and stays on your head really well and has made a big difference to me when doing routine stuff like carbs/plugs etc.Neat! ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
